Living in the Southwest, I have been occupied with turbulent and expansive landforms and cloudscapes. After 3-4 years, it became clear the work was making the departure from rendering to abstraction, as the negative spaces, rhythms, and simplified silhouettes came into focus. I reached back into the figure and readily found the same personal forms encoded in my drawings. The visual vocabulary is nearly identical to the landscape vocabulary, even with the figure as the basis. The works are on Canal paper, using watersoluble graphite and caseing. The monochrome palette highlights the rhythms and volumes.
